Dance & Drum Performances

Ome’lika Kuumba and Metropolitan African Dances & Drummers offer tailor-made performances for clients including, rite of passage observances, corporate events, family reunions, and more. Some performances include opportunities for audience interactions, including call and response, playing of percussion instruments, singing and dancing.

Our themed performances and concerts incorporate narratives, dances, rhythms and songs. Ome’lika Kuumba and Metropolitan Atlanta African Dancers & Drummers take viewers on journeys to countries in West Africa and places around the African Diaspora. From the symbols, principles and history of Kwanzaa, to inspiring stories about renowned men and women of Africa and the African Diaspora, to lessons about history that stimulate self-discovery, and encourage cross-cultural respect, these performances offer opportunities for viewers to be inspired by the beauty and richness of African and African American cultures.

CONCERTS include the following:

  1. Our Stories… Our Way is a historical journey of enlightenment highlighting lives of African and African American men, with dances, recounts, rhythms, and songs of Africa and the African Diaspora.
  2. Kisomo: The Lesson is a journey through West Africa and the African Diaspora through dance, rhythm, song & more.
  3. Kwanzaa: It’s More Than a Holiday is a program that incorporates the seven principles of Kwanzaa in how we can conduct our daily lives.

  5. We Do Play is a production highlighting the challenges and triumphs of women who drum.

All productions have Study Guides for preparation and reference purposes and can be adapted for schools, organizations, etc.

Dance & Drum Workshops

Metropolitan Atlanta Dancers & Drummers leads workshops in African and Contemporary dance forms and demonstrates the correlation between the movement styles. Students will warm up, learn movements and rhythms and interact with the instructors and one another while experiencing the joys of dancing and playing with cultural exploration. When done in conjunction with a performance, a workshop will give all of the attendees the chance to learn movements to one or more of the dances presented during the performances.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of workshops include the following:

1. Aerobic and anaerobic activities through exercising, dancing, and drumming

2. Affirmation by learning and demonstrating movement sequences and rhythm patterns

3. Cultural exploration through dancing and drumming

4. Discovering similarities between African and Contemporary movement and music

5. Experiencing the joy of dance to recorded music and live drumming

6. Experiencing the joy of drumming, learning history, techniques of playing and more

Sister Ome’lika and Metropolitan Atlanta African Dancers & Drummers enjoy sharing experiences that are culturally enriching, educational, energizing, engaging, enjoyable, and empowering. Our interactive workshops allow participants to reflect on the beauty of African cultures and see how interconnected African dance movements and contemporary movements are.
