Soaring High is a band featuring Sis. Ome’lika Kuumba and highlighting talented and seasoned musicians, vocalists and dancers. Soaring High showcases original lyrics and music penned by Sis. Ome’lika as well as arrangements of traditional African rhythms and songs. The lyrics bring to mind aspects of African American experiences, challenges, triumphs, love, joy, appreciation of family and nature, and more. Called Message Music by Kuumba, it is music that is thought-provoking, validating and encouraging. Soaring High offers an opportunity for people to enjoy something that is becoming a rarity- live musical instrumentation. In addition to moving vocals, audiences experience the sonic and visual thrills of hearing and seeing the sounds of actual instruments, many of which are often heard now from the realm of musical technology.
Soaring High is the merging of West African rhythms and instruments with keyboard, bass guitar, drum set, trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone, flute and violin. Blending elements of contemporary soul, house, neojazz, reggae, and traditional West African rhythms, Soaring High is a perfect score for one’s day. An auditory adventure, Soaring High features vocals, percussion, and djembe orchestra and brings messages of affirmation, light, and power. An empowering aspect is women playing drums (drum set and djembe) – instruments most often seen being played by men. Soaring High provides a creative experience that incorporates video, African dance, Afro Fusion and modern movement. This multi-faceted production takes viewers and listeners on a creative journey that pleases palates across gender, age and ethnicity.
The first concert for Soaring High was during the pandemic. We had the privilege of performing Under the Tent at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA.
Soaring High enjoyed performing at the Women Who Drum Festival in Detroit, Michigan.
